Flat tires are a bummer, not just for your day of riding, but for your wallet and knuckles.

There is nothing worse than a flat tire at a race. Most riders don’t know how to change a tire, so a flat often means the end of their day at the races or paying someone to fix it for you (if you have the correct tube with you). Thankfully, there is no shortage of no-flat concepts on the market to make flat tires an unlikely happenstance. Here are six ways to end flat-tire phobia.

The Hi-Point integrated tubeless tire uses a ply of the tire’s carcass as the tube.

HI-POINT INTEGRATED TUBELESS TECHNOLOGY (ITT)

Most creative: Integrated Tubeless Technology (ITT) uses a vulcanized layer of nylon fabric to form a tubular air chamber inside the tire. In layman’s terms, Hi-Point takes 1 ply of the tire’s carcass and lets it hang down from the inside of the tire. It is vulcanized, essentially rubberized, so that this single ply can hold air. The single vulcanized ply completes the circle of the tire’s carcass so that the tire itself is the tube. The Hi-Point motocross tire is no longer available, but there is an Innova ITT mountain bike tire.

Nitromouse tubes comes in two different densities—12 psi and 8 psi.

You can’t lose air from a Nitromousee because it is encapsulated in tiny bubbles in the foam mixture.

Most used: Nitromousse gets its name because its foam mixture contains a high concentration of nitrogen in the micro-bubble matrix of the elastomer foam. This lessens the dead feel of a normal mousse. Nitromousse makes two different models. The standard Nitromousse mimics the 12 psi of the typical motocross setup. The Nitromoussee Soft version mimics 8 psi. The Soft version is designed for EnduroCross, rock-garden rides and muddy woods. No matter which Nitromousse model you choose, the best thing about a Nitromousse is that it can never go flat. www.nitromousse.com

The Tech 2 heavy-duty tubes offer three different options on tube thickness. The 2mm thick versus is best for motocross.

STI TECH 2 HEAVY DUTY TUBES

Cheapest: Heavy-duty tubes are cheap protection, and STI makes three models. They make a 2mm-thick Heavy Duty tube, (which is what the MXA wrecking crew uses in our test bikes when we are nervous), a 3mm-thick Extreme Duty tube that is best suited to off-road bikes and adventure bikes, and finally they make a 4mm-thick Ultra-Heavy Duty tube for rally bikes and big four-stroke adventure bikes. Best of all, the STI Heavy Duty tube is cheaper than most regular tubes. www.stipowersports.com

The Tube Saddle’s foam liner cushions the tube against the rim to stop pinch flats.

TUBE SADDLE NO-PINCH TIRE LINER

Anti-pinch: The Tube Saddle is a lightweight foam insert designed to prevent pinch flats. It requires no modification to the rim and installs essentially the same as an inner tube (although in addition to an inner tube). Think of a Tube Saddle as one-third of a mousse. It fits against the rim and up the sides of the tube to act as a cushion against having the rim pinch the tube on hard landings. With the Tube Saddle, the MXA wrecking crew was able to run rear tire pressures as low as 8 psi for added traction with no ill effects or pinch flats. www.tubesaddle.com

The red rubber bladder seals the tire beads together to form a tubeless tire.

Tubeless: There are no readily available tubeless motocross tires. Why not? They require special rims, rubber sealing bladders and messy sealants. Nuetech devised a way to turn a standard tire into a tubeless tire. Instead of trying to seal the rim to keep air in the tire, Nuetech seals the gap between the two tire beads with a special rubber inner liner, which is a fancy way of saying bicycle tire. By filling the gap between the tire’s beads with an inflatable rubber bladder, the tire becomes an airtight chamber. It isn’t exactly tubeless, though, as the rubber inner bladder holds 100 psi. www.tubliss.com

You can change the pressure in the TireBalls to fine-tune the feel.

TIREBALLS HIGH PERFORMANCE INFLATION SYSTEM

More is better. The TireBalls High Performance Inflation System consists of multiple individual inflation cells inside your tire that replace the traditional tube. The puncture of a TireBall cell does not result in a flat tire, because it is only one cell out of 30. The TireBall cells are 10 times more puncture-resistant than a conventional heavy-duty tube. Available in motocross and off-road versions, TireBalls can be inflated to whatever pressure you want. www.tireballs.com

Malcolm Stewart gets to go fishing for at least the first half of the summer.

Previously a rumor, but now official: Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Malcolm Stewart is expected to miss the first half of the upcoming AMA Pro Motocross Championship as he continues to rehab an ongoing knee injury sustained during the Supercross season. The outdoor series begins on May 28 at Pala, where Shane McElrath is set to fill-in on the team in the 450 class (paradoxically for Dean Wilson and Malcolm Stewart at the same time). McElrath only had a four-race contract, when it was just Dean Wilson he was replacing, but now he will get at least two more Nationals. McElrath will be joined by teammates R.J. Hampshire, Stilez Robertson and Jalek Swoll.

Stewart delivered impressive Supercross results in his first season with the team. But, the Florida native sprained his knee during a crash at the St. Louis Supercross, but continued racing through the remainder of the season. He re-injured the same knee at the season finale in Salt Lake City and upon further evaluation, it was determined that he would need additional time for recovery. Stewart hopes to line up for the second half of racing this summer—perhaps at Millville on July 16.

Malcolm Stewart said, “I sprained my knee in an awkward crash at the St. Louis Supercross, but I managed to rehab it and ride through the pain well enough to make it through the remaining rounds feeling pretty good. I was really looking forward to returning to the MX Nationals this summer, but some things out of my control happened in the Salt Lake City Main Event and, in that crash, I further injured my knee. This has forced me to sit out at least the first half of the season. but I will continue to work hard at the Baker’s Factory in the meantime to make a full recovery, and I look forward to seeing all y’all fans this summer!”

Teammate Dean Wilson will also miss the first part of the season as he continues to recover from injuries sustained during his crash in St. Louis. In the meantime, Shane McElrath will fill-in for Wilson aboard the FC450 Rockstar Edition. Joining him in the 250MX lineup will be veteran team riders R.J. Hampshire, Stilez Robertson and Jalek Swoll who are all ready to contest the 2022 title this summer.

MXA flew to Michigan to ride the ll-new 2023 KTM 125SX, 250SX, 300 SX and all three four-stroke models. Given the time constraints of only having one-day to ride, especially since we had to head to Barcelona, Spain, the next morning to test ride the Stark Varg at the Golf MX track (which got canceled and rescheduled) while we were at the Chicago sirport). With the time constraints of doing six bikes in one day, we elected to focus our video efforts on the 2023 KTM 300SX.

The biggest news, that is not related to KTM’s technology, is that the 2023 KTM two-strokes probably won’t be in the showrooms until September, but based on the interest in the 300SX, you might want to get your name on your local dealers list today.

Bolt MX has come up with the solution to stop the rear fender and airbox cover T-plates from falling on the ground every time you work on your bike. At first glance, the side-mounted 2019–2022 Kawasaki KX airboxes and air filters look like a cool idea—until you start living with them. Problems? We have a few. First, it takes two different-size T-handles to get the Kawasaki airbox cover off. KTM, GasGas and Husqvarna have no bolts. Yamaha has a single Dzus fastener and Honda has one bolt. We aren’t complaining about having to loosen two bolts, but we are complaining about having to loosen two different-size bolts. It shows a lack of understanding about what buyers appreciate. Second, the lower airbox cover bolt is prone to stripping out the subframe threads, Third, Kawasaki’s filter-cage design is difficult to use, which is odd because Kawasaki redesigned it to make it easier to use. Fourth, the airbox is so small that there is no room to maneuver the cage, and you can’t see the hook and post when you are installing the filter. Finally, when you remove the top airbox cover bolt, which doubles as the left-side seat bolt, the T-nut plate, that the seat bolt threads into, falls out of its recess in the rear fender and lands on the ground.

When we complained to Kawasaki about our issues with the T-nut plate falling out every time we opened up the airbox, they agreed that it was an issue. Now, three years later, it is still an issue. We tried Super Glue to keep the T-nut in the fender; it cracked. We tried silicone sealant; it spun. We tried Shoe Goo; it lasted for a while. Finally, we reverted to the only solution left; we bent over and picked up the T-nut plate every time it fell off. We were defeated.

Luckily, Bolt MX Motorcycle Hardware read our complaints and came up with a true-to-life solution with its Kawasaki rear-fender Perma-Nut kit. The Bolt MX’s Perma-Nuts differ from the standard Kawasaki T-nut plate in that the threaded tubular extension, that the airbox cover bolt threads into, has a lip at the top of the tube that has a larger diameter than the stock threaded tube and hole in the plastic fender. So, when you tighten the Bolt’s Perma-Nuts the first time, the large lip is pulled through the Kawasaki fender plastic, which means that it can’t fall out. Problem solved.

Installation is a snap. You use the stock seat bolt to pull the Perma-Nut plate through the plastic fender. It takes about 10 minutes to do both sides of the Kawasaki. Of course, the job of installing them is made easier because the stock T-plates fall out and don’t have to be removed.

DIGITS? $14.99 (two Perma-Nuts)—www.boltmx.com or (805) 466-6686..

MXA RATING: Bolt MX solved the problem that has stymied Kawasaki since 2019. Well worth the money.

“The newest member of the Battlecross X series is here. The Battlecross X31 tire is made for a broader range of intermediate terrain in big bike sizes. Starting where the X30 left off, the X31 is enhanced with bunker groove technology for greater traction on both harder and softer terrain.

Bunker grooves work by improving casing flex, which improves biting edges for traction in softer conditions. Also, the cooling fins keep the feel consistent throughout your moto.” —Bridgestone’s Phil Simons.
